ASC'ers Surf Trip to El Salvador

Hotwash Report & Pics:  April 21-28, 2004

Transportation We booked our trip through Wavehunters., who contracted with Punta
Mango guides. Punta Mango provided our lodging, surf guides and ground transportation. Air travel was on TACA airlines.

Check-in and luggage was ok at BWI, though we got charged $100 for the 10' coffin bag (x boards inside).  On the return trip we were charged...

Car rental .
Hotel We stayed at Mango's Lounge in La Libertad the first half of the week near Punta Roca.  The second half of the trip was at the hotel Tropiclub Cabanas in El Cuco.

Description and evaluation of each; value for price?

Weather Weather was hot and dry, winds came up everyday around midmorning.

Onshores?  Afternoon/late afternood winds?

Surf conditions Surf started out pretty strong and then kind of lulled mid to late week. Got a couple of nice rides on my first real point breaks and rivermouths. Would recommend it to all!

Yeah the pics of the point actually working are El Zonte. We were staying right on the Point (punta roca) but it was never really working while we were there. Bad swell direction combined with bad winds I guess. K-59, and Flores wasn't really working either. We mostly surfed Sunzal because it was fairly easy and was pretty much guaranteed to have something. I also went off and surfed La Bocana (left rivermouth) myself one day and had a blast. Reminiscent of glassy chest to head Ocean City...

Food Food was good, simple fare. Seafood, rice, chicken, and beef dishes.

All meals were provided by tour guides?  Eat out on the economy?

Getting over my "norte americano intestinal fiesta" and getting the smell of burning brush/garbage out of my sinuses.

Crime Apparently there is a bit of a crack problem in El Salvador but we didn't see anything scary.  Pretty good trip though with no problems.  On the other hand, one of the surf guides was always guarding our gear in the van.

Money
USA dollars/ATMs.

Other expenses Other expenses included fruit at the local market, tipping the guides, and some "cultural" activities.

How much did this set you back?

Other activities We took a couple of  "cultural" trips to Mayan ruins and a volcano.

Would you recommended these activities?

Surf gear Paul took a tuflite Al Merrick m-13 New Blue 7'6" and a WRV 7'4" funfish which I hardly used.

Why didn't you use it?   What kind of shape is the Al Merrick?

Other gear Flashlight. Could have used a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter?

Sunzal Point
El Zonte.
El Zonte.
El Zonte. This is where the "pros" were, of which we were not! OH breaking over all rocks, no channel out...
