Saturday Begins With a Beautiful Sunrise

Gary Lay's President Report: I got the day off Friday (much needed) and headed down to meet Giles at Naval Jetties. Got in the water about 11, with Jack about a half hour behind me; Marlow, Cory, and Chris Smith opted for NIRI. Had a great Friday of lots of chest high and glassy. Rights all day. Steve Page showed up with a brand new longboard but had to scatter pretty quickly due to family matters. Had a relaxing night at Giles' with the Moos family and a few beers. Casa de Giles was laid back as usual.

Aloha garden the next morning brought out Foon, Rod, Roy and new member Dean. More surf later that day at NJ's, at about knee to waist, very calm and small but fun trading off with everybody, including Moos who made it out with the kids, Giles, Roy, and Dean. Great weather.

Spring Fling party at Chet's house was a good time although some of the folks had to bug out and didn't make it. Thanks again to Chet and Barb Halleck for putting up with us for yet another year and for the best potato salad I think I have ever had.

Not exactly epic surf but fun surf and a Great Weekend. Condolences to Neal and Doug Norris for no waves despite the heroic effort at Gordon's Pond cleanup.

Anybody who stayed in Baltimore/Annapolis/DC...you missed it.

Foon (ASC Historian) Reports: Rod and I came down on a really balmy Friday to find some significant but closed out waves in OC. I'm sure the good breaks were humming but also really crowded. On Saturday we joined other ASCers and members of the OC Surfrider Chapter to do a little indigenous wetlands grass planting for Earth Day weekend which was none too strenuous but did rub a hole in the palm of my left hand where I was using the soil hole puncher. Good thing I'm righty. I was pleased to see the largest contingent from our own ASC but there were other stoked workers who did a great job also.

Work being over we relaxed and napped the balance of Saturday until we traveled up to Chet's for the ASC Spring Fling gathering. As usual the food and company was superior. Everyone had a great time.

Though the Gordon's Pond Beach cleanup was called for Sunday morning, the weather was very sketchy down OC way. Alternating between hazy sun and ominous clouds we understand there was even a downburst weather event and a huge waterspout sighted in Bethany Beach. Rod, the ever diligent data weenie he is, calculated that our contribution of cleaning up Gordon's Pond would be reduced significantly by our waste of gas to drive the 40 miles round trip. So, knowing our trustworthy fellow club members would do a splendid and thorough job, we decided to minimize our carbon footprint and stayed home. In addition we made efforts to recycle all the newpaper and plastic we used that weekend and only took a short drive to Chauncy's to talk paipos with Shelly Dawson.

In all, it was a satisfying and relaxing weekend at the shore which gives us hope for warmer weather, water and waves.

In the evening the ASC group gathered at Barbara & Chet Halleck's
Beach Shack in Rehoboth. Great food and raging debates about
the Hatteras Seashore closures to vehicles and people. Stories about surf
trips past and planned. Giles reveals he is interested in acquiring a paipo.

Dedicated no-wave members toiled long and hard
to gather a few bags of trash.

As we arrived about 10:00 am, someone was walking off the
beach with a bag of plastic trash. Overall the beach is well maintained
thanks to environmentally friendly beach rats.

This photo believed to be shot by Chet Halleck,
a proud member of the Paipo Brotherhood.
