The Paul Report:
Hit low tide at Rehobeth around 9am, glassy, little to no winds, waist
with I do believe the occasional bigger set. Nice longboarding waves and
no one else out until around 1pm! They must have all been at the contest.
Around 2pm the wind started getting on it and as the tide was rising the
conditions started deteriorating. Coincidentally, this is also when other
people started showing up. Nice Day!

Waves: Found the swell and the surf contest in the same place early
Friday . Three foot glassers were enough for a short or longboard. The
contest was not too intrusive, until snake was dropped because of a paddling
interference call. There were only three people who caught waves in Snake's
heat. The first and second placers had three nice rides each and Snake
had a decent scoring wave. The interference call put a guy who caught,
half stood and fell off a single wave into the next heat. Never did care
much for the politics of contests.
Fortunately, that left the
rest of the weekend to party. The banquet was filled with expensive beer,
decent food and George's band, K-39 cranking the tunes. Snake and I both
walked away with raffle prizes and a swager to our step. Saturday brought
a pretty longboard swell at first light. Snake was aching, but I had a
blast. The swell increased with the tide and a few four footers with long
sweeping lines were to be had. You should have seen the talent of the contestants
on Saturday. What a thrill it must be for grommets these days. Snake was
whining and my grass was as high as the waves so we bailed late Saturday.
Go to the beach gentlemen. If you go, they will come.

Bruce Gabrielson Report:
All I can say if if you didn't get on it you really missed it. Jeff
and I drove down early Friday to be greated by 3-4 ft (and sometimes larger)
long breaking, consistent, easy to catch, peeling lefts and
rights. We were north
of the contest area about two blocks and had it mostly to ourselves.
For a stretch I caught so many good waves that I started to compose a song
about it. I also saw Jeff get a nice right that he says "ended his
skunk" whatever that means? We hauled my new large push-up tent down
on the beach and once set up it became the hangout for many of the OC locals.
The waves stayed great all
day and a little later Jeff and I got over to my friends to clean up, have
a few suds and get ready for the competitors dinner and party. The food
was super and George's band put on a tremendous show.
Next morning I woke up with
a tight shoulder and arm so sore I couldn't lift it. The surf was still
great. I tried to put my wetsuit on but finally gave in to the power of
pain over mind. I had a bad day watching everyone else score on nice
waves and ended up leaving early. My arm is still sore. |
