1/10/2003 Outing Report

The call for compatriots came mid week, with only one sole answering the call. Sulking from missing the clean 4 footers on Thursday, Chris Smith and Kieran Shea load up head east form the Parole meeting spot. Little to no traffic landed us at the NJs pre dawn, arriving at the parking lot overlook with just enough light to see some nice pealing waves, not an epic day but it looked fun.  The longboarders were in true form with Kieran winning the size contest, a custom 10'2" Pearson arrow and my 10' Driftwood and borrowed 10' RRD (epoxy board) rounded out a nice set. We paddled out along the jetty at almost exactly low tide and had caught several waves before the sun had even broke the surface of the ocean.  A zen moment was had by all, both of
us, as the sun rose off the ocean. Then we remembered why we there, and we resumed catching mostly knee plus waves with an occasional waist high set cruising through. The rides were definitely fun and several were to the beach.  The wind started to come up around 8:30 and that was the beginning to the end of an otherwise pleasant morning.  A cross chop started to build which by about 9:00 made catching the waves a little interesting.  Both souls emerged with smiles on their faces just as a lone short boarder decided to give it a go, for about 15 minutes. Back at Parole just before noon, left the rest of the day get things done, you know the required nap.

For those wondering, both surfers were clad in 4/3 suits, Kieran's with a hole in it and the temps were described by both as comfortable. Water was probably in the mid 40s, sorry I forgot to check.

Hope to see more of you next time,

Chris
