| Rod's Report. I
stepped into some liquid last Thursday, got righteously wet did I with
that salty fluid rich in tequila and lime. Then it was on to the preview
showing in uptown D.C. The movie/film/documentary was average - I
might give it a C- or a C+, but you get the idea. It was presented somewhat
like Endless Summer I/II (it has sometimes been "marketed" as Endless Summer
III), but lacked a coherent theme or vision other than "stepping into liquid
can be fun." Can't say the film covered too much new ground and hardly
anything was better than what's been published in the past.
The good and different:
Surf on the Great Lakes... can't say I've seen this on the big screen before...
nothing spectacular, but different. Surfing the wakes of super oilers on
the Gulf Coast. Some surfing on Easter Island and in Ireland (but
the Irish footage was mediocre). Hydrofoil surfing the big waves of Maui
(but the presentation begged for more).
The bad and boring:
Too much tow-in surfing... all the main spots were covered -- Cortez Bank,
Mavericks, Jaws (guess Waimea just doesn't measure up anymore except for
bodyboarders riding the crunching shorebreak). The funniest frames showed
the boat driver paddling smack into a set at Cortez.
I guess the film *may* appeal
to audiences in Middle America but it mostly appears to be a crass attempt
to cash in on Blue Crush inertia. A fun time if you can score the
free passes... or are in the middle of a long hiatus from the beach...
otherwise, wait for the DVD. Thanks to Surfrider
DC Capitol Chapter for the complimentary tickets.
Good ASC attendance (Chet,
Snake, Jeff, Neal, Brian, Russ and myself... hope I didn't leave anyone
out... sorry Tom Holton wasn't able to make it and a couple of the other
DC-based members).
