| Bruce Gabrielson's Dick
Dale Report. Quick report on the Dick Dale show at the Rams Head.
Kim and I arrived around 6pm and proceeded into the basement bar for a
few cold ones before George and the rest of the K-39 band and their families
arrived. K-39, named after the famous Baja California surf break,
is George's "bitchen" (as Dick would say) surf band that performed at my
luau last summer. It was graduation weekend at Naval Academy so there
were many cadets and their parents socializing and having dinner.
Once K-39 arrived we had
to wait a few minutes but were finally ushered into the restaurant for
some good food and a few more drinks before being escorted directly from
out table to our table for the show. George had managed center row
seating for us, the perfect spot to watch the master perform. I've
been to numerous Dick Dale shows in the past, beginning in the mid-60s,
and never cease to be amazed at the depth and talent the "King-of-the Surf
Guitars" displays every time he performs.
The rest of the ASC crew
did drop by our table a few times and George and I got to the "far" back
for a couple of visits. I also saw another old surf bud from several
years back. He doesn't surf anymore but likes to attend Dick's annual
visit to Annapolis every year. About the only drawback all night
was getting home at 12:30 am and having to be up at 6 in the morning for
work.
Rod's Report. Scott Woodling, Beth and I
reunited for an encore Dick Dale concert... this year at the more staid
Ram's Head (last year we and KC caught
the show at the Rechter Theater in Towson, a different but another
great venue). In a sea shell, this old guys still is a high energy rocker
and plays a mean but smooth guitar. Relatively newcomer, Jeff Marlow
plus fellow paipo boarder, Chet Halleck and wife joined us for this year's
show. Oh, and I can't forget the K-39er, George Vermillion (but he sat
with his band and Bruce at the chi chi seats with a close-up view (you
know how they are getting soooo old, infirmed and unable to get around
well much less see and hear <g>). The ASC tables toughed it out
way back in the nose bleed section (50 feet is WAAY BACK) but our company
was great, the beer flowed constantly and we enjoyed some good food together.
Many thanks to Scott for
reserving our tables!
