The Kirk Report:  Todd, Chris Smith, and I met at the Bay 50 lot at 3:45am today to hit the light dawn winds and low tide at Assateague. As part of our duty to represent ASC in the upcoming TOTN contest, we divorced ourselves from our shorter sticks and took only our longboards.

Arrived to find no wind and waist-chest peelers, as predicted.....with no one out anywhere. The lefts were a little sectiony, shutting down after about 50yds after a semi-steep dropin over the sandbar. Rights had a little less form but walled up for really long rides if you managed your speed and turns well. We all took a little time to get adjusted to the oil tankers we were riding, and then started picking the place apart. There were some beautiful rides by everyone, and a few classic wipeouts also spread around. Onshores picked up at about 8:30am, and by 9am we were bobbing around in shapeless mush--waves not even connecting the sandbar. Also found out that the (formerly walkable) trough between the two major sandbars is now apparently a hole---super deep. Something to look out for the next time y'all surf there.

Not a bad morning!

SUMMER of SURF FLICKS @ Dr. Dremo's Taphouse in Arlington, VA
ASC Regulars: Chris Smith, Neal Carver, Rod, Foon, Jeff Marlow, Chet, Curtis Miller
Surfrider Foundation Capitol Chapter/ASC Newbies: David "LongBoardKook" Riordon, Darcy

"ADRIFT," a Jipsie Brother Production. Synopsis: A collection of longboard action footage that ranges from small wave rides to pipe tubes. This video features Donald Takayama, Joel Tudor, Bonga Perkins and other top longboarders in 0-10' waves in California, Hawaii, Australia, and New York. All put together with the great sounds of blues, classical, Hawaiian Music, and jazz legend Nina Simone delivering a classic version of Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" for the Pipeline sequence!

Rodrigo Report:  This was an excellent way to cap off the hump of the week -- the feature film plus some other light surfing video. It is sometimes amazing what these riders can do in larger, steep surf. On the other hand that should come as no surprise since all some of us had in the beginning of our surfing days were longboards (rather crude shapes by today's standards). Nonetheless, despite my allegiance to *very* short board riding, it is always fun to marvel as the best of the sport dazzle us with smooth and incredible moves that they so effortlessly execute. On the ASC side it was good to finally put some faces and bodies to names... Curtis and Darcy (having met Chris Smith and Jeff Marlow at Guys' Weekend). Kerrie called in with last minute regrets as she had to pull duty with the Orange Terror Alert in effect. Most of us left before the Goths took over for the evening.
Postscript: Without ASCers in attendance the turnout would have been very small (<6).
