ASC's Resident "Swami
of Swell" Reports on Wednesday, May 14th:
Wow, the forecast is solidifying
and I really *want* it to be a challenging/complex forecast (like last
weekend, since there *was* a 1-hour glass off at one point during the entire
weekend that I didn't call). Let me also say that just because NE winds
drop from 25kt to NE 15kt doesn't make it a glass-off.
However, this weekend looks
pretty simple. A series of lows are taking the typical winter nor'easter
storm path, and are 24-48 hours apart. At this point, there looks to be
3 of them, lasting into early next week. The first will pull offshore Friday
and *may* allow for a quick evening glass-off (see above glass-off disclaimer)
before the next L cell pulls into the region Friday night, causing strong
NE winds.
Dawn patrol Saturday has
some potential for some weakened winds, but the overall pattern for the
day will be stable to slightly building onshore winds in the 20kt range.
Sunday morning the second
L looks to pull offshore, which would be awesome except the prevailing
winds will be drawn toward the NEXT low cell onshore... oh, brother. Conditions
Sunday look to be about as miserable as Saturday.
Sometime next week (looks
like early Tuesday right now) the third low will finally peel offshore,
and it'll be time to get some glass!!.... if there's any beach left!
Let me also say this: the
forecasts are DEFINITELY not uniform at this time, so if you are hell bent
on surfing this weekend, you will probably have to use the Bruce G. approach
(no, not "Know Where to Look"): basically, show up at the beach, hope for
the best, and make the best of whatever surf shows up-good or bad.

Chet's paipo quiver. The
board on the far left is a dished out kneeboard shape, a variation on the
spoon. Next to it is a spooned out paipo board meant for proning but could
also be kneelo'd. The tear drop shape is a late '60s down-the-line shape
that featured nearly no rocker. The square tail was a popular '60s model
(this in an original build board but this shape was frequently adapted
from broken longboards) - this one sports a single fin (many of these had
twin fins). |
Patriotic Paipo Perp |
Chet and I made "paipo love"
during Saturday's rainy, blown out afternoon. We took detailed measurements
of these boards (click
here for an example) as part of cataloguing process for my paipo
board web page. My page will complement the Australian pods
for primates inventory of paipo
boards. We also catalogued my Red Machine III and Foon's Pocket Rocket. |
Our host, Doug Rhodes, opened
his villa to a bunch of retreads, retards, and retros... but survived (actually,
the Snake never showed up). Thanks for sharing, Doug! |

Justine
couldn't join us for Guys' Weekend (after all she ain't no guy), but she
joined us in spirit with this post to the ASC message board:
Wow. Finally getting around
to sharing some pics of my Southern California trip in April. I can
tell it's Guy's weekend, my mailbox isn't that full from all the message
posts! I haven't been the most active person, but I do read a lot of the
posts you ASCers put up. You've all been pretty busy with trips here and
there. I hope to get down the weekend of the 30th-1st of June. The
water temps are climbing, but what would you suggest wearing during that
time? I have a 3/2 which is probably my best bet, but also a 2/1 spring.
I'm sure you all are having fun. Hopefully the winds settle down for a
fun Sunday sesh! Good luck!

Marlow's Weekend Report. Great party this past "guys weekend".
Too much surf for any of us to trust going out. Movies so decadent that
they melted a DVD player. Pagan Paipo worship and stories about anyone
that wasn't in attendance. Many perverse acts that may never be discussed,
but look for the incriminating photo's to be posted on the web. It
is hard to look in the mirror and keep a straight face....hope Doug's wife
doesn't find out. |

Surf Reports

Two
day trippers stop for pre-surf nourishment at ASC Weekend HQ - hot toasted
bagels and eXpresso coffee... at an ungodly hour of 6:45am on a blown-out
Sunday morning. I don't think they had to undergo the same recovery
process as us boys. |

Chet Reports.
Doug - Great time at the crib waiting, hanging. Too bad there was no place
to look in the blown out conditions. Sunday morning was a grinder, but
we charged. We definitely need to hook up when conditions are more favorable
for long boards. And what a GREAT pounding it was, and paddling back outside
was wicked - I was a little sore yesterday.
Doug Replies:
Thanks for coming and bringing the stogies especially..... it was great
to meet you and I too wish we could have had some serious sessions. It
would have made a world of difference in the fun meter... We will no doubt
hook up throughout the summer...... Thanks again, Doug |
