Rides: A longboard as soon as I buy one. (Update) I bought one, a 96 Ricky Carroll. Also, I bought a 1964 surfboard. It is one heck of surf torpedo. Its a simple board with clear (yellowed) glass with a 2+ stringer, two red stripes and a cool looking single wooden fin. The board is 910 long and is pretty thick with well rounded rails. I took it to Assateague once and got a few rides on it. Due to the repairs it needs, I think it will get retired as a display item. Surf History: I got my first taste of surfing about 10 years ago. My old roommate, Craig, had been going to Chincoteague his whole life with his family and invited me to join him. His father and uncle had bought boards in the mid-60's and they still rode them at the beach every year. They had a collection of three longboards that they would trade off riding and they gave me a shot a riding them. I missed a few waves, nose-dived a few, caught a few and had a great time. Over the next few years, the boards were handed down to Craig and I joined him and his family at the beach every year and borrowed a board for a rides. A bunch of things happened in the late 90s that caused me to miss out on some surfing. For some reason, when Assateague started blocking off much of the ORV zone are due to the piping plover mating, we didn't surf much. Maybe it was because we couldn't cruise the beach for the right "spot" anymore? I don't know... there's probably aren't a very many good reasons to NOT surf. There were a couple of years where were didn't vacation together(my wife and I built a log house and had a couple of kids, etc.). This year, I got a chance to borrow a board and ride again. I stood up on my first wave and had a lot of fun. This year, I realized that a fun day at the beach for me is on a surfboard. I am inexperienced rider and I have fun surfing the little waves and white-water. Other Interests: All kinds of bicycles (mountain, road, freestyle, BMX, trials) and I ride motorcycles (a sportbike and my favorite for bouncing off of the trees in the woods: a Honda XR400 dirtbike).
