Surf History:
I started surfing with my neighbors at their beach place in Nags Head in
the late 60s. It took all three of us to carry that 12' Hobie across
the street to the beach and took two of us paddling to get it moving, but
we were having a blast. I continued to surf the Outer Banks and Virginia
Beach area until the mid 80s when I graduated from college and with my
"real job" I could not afford to drive four hours to play at the beach.
For the next almost two decades I pursued
other things (bicycles,
snow skiing and scuba diving), until the summer of 2000, when a family
trip landed me in Avon, NC. I started off purchasing a Tim Nolte
Funshape and that week proved to be the spark that would ignite into my
second passion for surfing. After struggling with the relatively
small waves we frequently get, I decided to try longboarding. During
a quiver adjustment I purchased a 9'6" Robert August "What I Ride" and
really caught the longboard fever in the spring of 2002. I spent
the spring, summer and fall going to Assateague and enjoying the nice high
tide longboard waves several times a week. The quiver has now grown
to seven and ranges from 7'2" to 10'. I have been trying to find
others looking to go surfing with and now it looks like I finally found
it thanks to my former co-worker Curtis Miller.
I am an IT/Environmental
Consultant - currently DC for FAA
