Alex Rodgers
Bodyboarder - Wilmington, NC, formerly of Arbutus, MD

My dad turned me on to wave riding. I started on a Morey Boogie Mach 7+7 that my dad won in an ESA contest. I used to skim board but now just stick to bodyboarding.  Started in Cape Hatteras and Ocean City but my favorite spots now are in Puerto Rico.

Alexandria Niewijk
Surfrider - Washington, D.C., and moving to Oahu in 2006

I am a surfing foreign service officer looking for surfing buddies and friends who in the future can visit me once I am posted to a country (in 18 mos. or so) and surf in remote locations. I have lived in the San Francisco Bay area, Sydney, Australia, and many other places, but most recently moved to DC from NYC. I am a fairly beginner level surfer.  I went to the Las Olas women's surf camp in Sayulita, Mexico last winter and have surfed on my own. I love it. Yes, you can bring your surfboard on the NY subway and surf at Rockaway beach.  Looking forward to meeting you!

Brian "Grumbling Snowman" Gable
Shortboarder - Orange County, CA, formerly of Washington, D.C.
Moved Spring 2004.

Born and raised in San Diego, CA.  Dad taught me how to surf at around age 8. I surfed all the way through High School until I left for school at JMU in Harrisonburg, VA.  I would return home often and surf breaks like Black's Beach and the reefs in Point Loma during Summer, Xmas, and Spring breaks.  After college, I moved to DC, and after buying a board out here, began surfing Ocean City, MD, Assateague, and Hatteras on a regular basis. Basically, when the waves are up, and the winds are right, I am going no matter what.

I am trying to find a way to get some folks together to go exploring some of the barrier islands off Chincoteague for a little surf adventure! Anybody got a boat?

Just got some new rubber, and am pumped for some cold water surfing!

Moved June 2004.

Surf History: Chris and Neal Carver go way back as kids growing up in Calvert County. "He was with with me on many of the surf adventures I took in the VW camper. He was one of the guys that was with me during that trek to the "Wedge" many moons ago.  Chris and I didn't know it even had a name back then."

Curtis Miller aka "bouncesofftrees"
Longboarder - Harwood (south of Annapolis), MD
Age: 33, Day Job: Software Engineer

Surf History: I got my first taste of surfing about 10 years ago, but did not surf much in the late '90s... there probably aren't many good reasons to NOT surf. This year, I got a chance to borrow a board and ride again.  I stood up on my first wave and had a lot of fun.  I am inexperienced rider and I have fun surfing the little waves and white-water.  I now own/ride a 9’6” Ricky Carroll. Other Interests:  All kinds of bicycles and I ride motorcycles.

Francisco Calderon
Shortboarder - Denver, CO, formerly of Crofton, MD
Moved June 2004.

Started surfing as a 12 year old in PR. Surfed intensively until 25, shaped boards to support my traveling. Moved to Michigan a few years to work on my PhD, lack of surfing during that period left me with an urge to surf that I will never be able to get rid of. Lived several years in Northern CA, and rode Santa Cruz often. I now work as a scientist for the USDA in Beltsville, Md. I like to travel and have ridden Costa Rica many times, the Canary Islands, Hawaii, France, Brazil as well as several other places. I like Asseateague locally and Hatteras. My best surf ever has been in Roca Bruja CR, Pavones CR, Las Palmeras in the Canary Islands, and Wildo PR. I also enjoy windsurfing, skiing, cooking, scuba, homebrewing, reading.

George "Beast" Vermillion
Longboarder - Crofton, MD

I started surfing in 1962, I had a 9'2" Ole that weighed in at 36lbs.  Living in Fullerton CA,  it was 25 miles to Huntington, several friends and I fashioned surfboard trailers for our bikes as we couldn't get a ride to the beach.  I'm just getting back into surfing and enjoy the comraderie of the ASC... I also am a part time musician, and play bass guitar with Pocket Change.

Heather "HOT" Taylor
Grommet - Ocean City, MD
Formerly of Gambrills, MD

I am 18 years old and have always wanted to learn to surf, but never knew anyone who did. I used to boogie board for hours whenever my family visited the beach, but my first time on a real board was on June 6, 2003. And now I'm addicted. I hope I can surf a lot more often and learn a lot more about it in the future. Right now I'm going to school at AACC -- my major is graphic design.

"And when the ocean drowns the land,
I'll be beside you for the ride."

Justine Renzi
Bodyboard - Baltimore, MD
Now a student at Salisbury University.

I have spent every summer on 36th street bayside of OC/Md since 5 years of age. Fell in love with surfing upon my first exposure. I have been bodyboarding, for 10 years, but only seriously for 3 years. I am just beginning to travel in order to gain knowledge and experience: SoCal in winter of 2001 and spring 2002, including Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Trestles, Black's, and San Clemente. I hope to visit SoCal again in April 2003 for a few weeks. For now, I'm a high school student at Eastern Technical enrolled in the Allied Health program, where I hope to pursue a medical career. I also work at Oak Crest Village. In between the few days I have off, I hope to venture the cold waters at least a few times to release some stress and to just have fun surfing!

Wanted to surf all my life. Finally took a lesson in Hawaii in Oct 2001 and I've been on a mission ever since. I've surfed Hawaii, Tortola, SoCal (San Clemente), Cocoa Beach and Ocean City. I don't consider myself a beginner now, but I am working on my turns.  Other interests include all sports, especially basketball -- played religiously until I tore my ACL and now I surf instead.

I'm 31 (2003) and am an independent financial planner in Gaithersburg, MD. I was introduced to ASC by "Foon" who is a business aquaintance.  He was wearing his surfrider hat and we started chatting about surfing.

Rod's Note to the ASC Listserv:

This really isn't what I had in mind for reactivating the GuidoPalooza
listserv in 2003 :(  Sorry to hear Mr. Muffin is leaving us, we being the
GP but also the Annapolis Surf Club... very saddening... to lose such a
font of fun... after all, this is the fella that was awarded 2002's Panama
Monkey Trophy (awarded to the GuidoPaloozer who most embodies the

PanamASolas spirit of fun and challenge as the biggest party animal, as symbolized by the memorable imbibing of rum and warm strawberry soda.

There's also a special story that goes with this pic.

The boy simply ripped on my Hot Curl: Pic #1 and Pic #2.

And who can forget the Budweiser Cooler in the Line-Up at GP:

Aloha my good friend!

Is he a muffin or what???

Scott "Woody" Woodling
Bodyboarder - Baltimore, MD

I'm 33 and I've lived in MD since I was one, surfed East Coast from Del to NC, a place called the 'fish pass jetties' in Port Aransas TX, and several places in Kauai. Have surfed some standup in the past on rented boards, not very proficiently, though. Been going to OC/Del/Teague since I was a kid. Some of the best trips were the impromptu "Friday night for the weekend" trips with no place to stay and sleeping in my friend's jeep with no top in the empty garages of the beach condos north of Fenwick, which were just being built at the time... getting in the water first thing in the morning, getting kicked off the beach by the police at night.  Ahhh, the good ole' days.  My wife and I had our first child last year, so that, along with other things, keeps me a little too busy.
