Alex Westholm aka "Westy"
Waverider - Annapolis, MD

Started at the beginning of '06 season. Got a 6' potato chip off eBay that wouldn't float me. After finally realizing I'd never surf that thing, got a funshape and learned on that. Picked up a 6'6" rocketfish later that season, which quickly became my favorite board. This year I picked up a 6'6" Tim Nolte thruster as well, which is great during the no-wetsuit-wearing summer. I usually hit the Jetty or Northside, but after a really nice session there in September, I'm kinda curious about Bethany. My only non-delmarva surfing experience is Rincon, PR. Coming from Annapolis during the weekend, and very much looking to rideshare now that my main surfing bud is moving back to Paris. During the week, I live/go to law school in DC, so I'm MIA. My season is pretty much April 'til late December/early January.

Other interests: sailing, mountain biking, scuba, skiing, and skydiving.

Austin Saunders
Longboarder - Virginia Beach, VA

I started surfing about 12 years ago, am 22 years old (2006) and have been building boards for almost 6 years. My quiver is too long/variable to list. Favorite thing to do is noseride. Born and raised in VaBeach. I go to Hawaii every year, kind of my return to mecca type of deal. I try to surf when its good and work when its not. I am kinda boring...... haha.

I am a surfboard shaper:

Bob Savidge aka "jetjockey"
Longboarder - Arnold, MD

While growing up on the Jersey Shore (Lavallette, NJ), I surfed every now and then when I could borrow someone's board.  Many years later and at the beginning of this summer (2003) when visiting the beach house I just couldn't stand it anymore and went out and bought both boards. I have not looked back since and I'm now hooked big time.

Other Interests: Flying, cooking, woodworking, golf.

Brian Jesse aka "BJessee"
Longboarder/Shortboarder - Arlington, VA

Grew up in Huntington Beach, CA, but moved before High School to land locked PA. Went to school in DC and picked up surfing again in Australia on a semester abroad there and kept up with it ever since. Also, do snowboarding in the winter on the hills of the East Coast. In Virginia I am a Masonry Foreman(the brick laying type), which has absolutly nothing to do with my Finance major.

Brian Maglietta aka "killeryabphotog"
Surf Photog - Northern VA

Yes it's true a local photographer thats been published a good number of times for ESM and Surfer over the last 10 years that lives around D.C. Not bad for 3hrs away from a beach. Now I am a fulltime web guy for a Big Gov. Contractor and work in the gov't sector and don't get to dedicate much time to the art of photography as I used to. 've been published in Eastern Surf, Surfer Magazine, and Longboard Magazine.

Anyways I began surfing when I was 15 at Delaware Inlet on a friends shortboard. hahaha a 6'1 at the Inlet. Go figure. I got up a few times and got hooked. I got my own board and started to make as many trips to the beach once I got a car. Now I surf great 7'10 funshape and looking to possibly add a shortboard to my quiver this year once the foam industry calms down. Hope it doesn't break my credit card in half next time I go shop for a board. Been surfing from FL to Jersey and favs include Hawaii, San Diego and Our Beloved Outer Banks. Also been to Brazil last year, but didn't surf as much was I wanted to in Rio due to temporary blindness due to thongular disorder and skol disease. Water was suprising chilly at the time and people even wore fullsuits. Go figure. Aloha ASC!

Longboarder – Cheltenham, MD
Homeowner - Bethany Beach, DE
At-Large Member, Board of Directors (2006, 2007)

It all began early one summer in 1964.  Born and raised on the Jersey shore I rode my first wave at USO Beach in Long Branch, N.J. on a 9’2” Malibu. Worked for a while at the Monmouth Beach Surf Shop (exclusive to Dewey Weber Surfboards) Now 38 years and 16 boards later I am still riding and have returned to my favorite, a 9’2” Weber Performer. Surf at NSIRI most of the time. What would life be like without the ocean, the sun, and crisp clean waves?

Emile Monette aka "julienssurfingdaddy"
Shortboarder - Springfield, VA

I grew up surfing in Coronado, CA.  'Nado's local beach is best described as rare and Hollow. I also surfed La Jolla and Imperial Bch spots regularly. Spent a fair amount of time surfing N. Baja spots; beach breaks, points and rock reefs. Best barrels:  Mainland Mexico, undisclosed location, black sand rivermouth / beachbreak combo north of Acapulco and south of Mazatlan. Also surfed Oahu and Maui a few times. Overall, I like fast, hollow waves the best. I surfed Assateague one day last November, that's all the water time I've gotten in since moving here in July of 02.

Current rides: Mannkine - funboard and shortboard, Isle - fishy, Curren - gun.

I'm an officer in the Air Force and I attend law school part-time at night.  I look forward to getting involved w/DC surfrider and ASC.

Gary Lay
Longboarder - Cockeysville, MD
At-Large Member, Board of Directors (2007); President, Board of Directors (2008).

My name is Gary Lay and I heard about you folks from a couple of fellows at the Kitty Hawk Pier last year, and about the annual Guidopalooza, which seemed like a great idea. I live in Maryland during 9/10 of the year and Southern Shores in the Outer Banks during some or all of the summer. I am a 38 year old high school Anatomy and Paramedical Biology teacher. And, yes, summers off is worth it. I actually like my job a lot most of the time anyway. I am married 11 years and have 3 kids: two girls, 5 yrs and 15 months, and a new boy who's 5 months old.

I learned to surf while at Salisbury State University in 1986; graduated in 1990. I surfed on and off all the breaks around OC, Indian River Inlet, the Jetty, 48th, and Assateague for several years and then stopped for about 5 years due to a lot of business travel. (Teaching is my third and last career, after clinical genetics/immunology labwork and biotech sales) I re-discovered the waves in the Outer Banks about 7 years ago and have surfed all over the Outer Banks during summers and during fall swells when I could escape Maryland to get there for them.

My favorite spots are my home breaks at Kitty Hawk pier, Chickahauk beach (our neighborhood-only requires a bike and 5 min. travel), The Hatteras Light and the north side of Rodanthe Pier. I have also tasted the waves of Zippers near Cabo, and all around the Mission/Ocean Beaches areas of San Diego.

I normally ride a custom 9-0 Tim Nolte (an Outer Banks guy) or a 9-4 oil tanker John Ashton, which is about 10 yrs old, but still loved. I also have an old 5-8 Mark Richards 80s era twin fin that's too small for me. OK, this is getting to be a novel, so I'd better...

Jeff Marlow
Shortboarder/longboarder - Arlington, VA & Huntingtown, MD
Vice President, Board of Directors (2005, 2006)

Current rides: 6'-8" Harbour, 8'-0" G&S, 10'0" Dana Point Hobie, 9'-4" Walden Magic model, 9'-0" Walden Magic Bi-sect, 9'-0" Bud Gardiner Blade model, 9'-6" Gary Propper model Hobie, 10'-0" Cooperfish Nosedevil and a bunch of other boards. Definitely no paipos in the quiver.

Surfing history: While growing up in Florida, I surfed every swell that came ashore. Then moved to Delmarva and couldn't find a surf bud to save my life. The lifeguards told me about the Summer surfing beach policy and it forced me to question why I continued to abuse myself. Suffering from the shock, I tried to work myself to death and didn't surf for at least a decade. Made enough money to bag working and have returned to surfing every swell, in every place that I live. Hate cold, so look for me down South in Winter. Been to CA, the Bahamas, all of Florida, Hatteras and most of the East coast to surf. Just finished a Month in Hawaii and looking forward to a quick trip to Costa Rica. Looking to do many more surf trips. Long live the ASC and thanks for getting me back into surfing.

Jim Junker aka "bonedaddy"
Bodyboarder - Catonsville, MD

I've been doing the cheap boogie board summer addiction since high school (to date, 18 years). But I've recently decided that the cheap board days are numbered. It's time for the real deal. It's time to learn how to stand instead of riding on my gut. I need a board. I'm looking at an Ozone board from K-Coast.
I ride from sunrise to sunset. I love the ocean!

Other Interests: I love surfing and the ocean. I'm a chemist so I spend a lot of time with chemistry, math, and some physics. I can do the chess thing for hours.  Running is fun. This October I'll participate in my 7th Army Ten-Miler. Fixing my house and my
friend's houses is another hobby. And, did I mention I love surfing and the ocean? I think I did.

John Walker aka "papachet"
Funshape/Longboarder - Germantown, MD

I live and work in Germantown, MD. I don't speak German. I grew up in New Jersey and started surfing there in 1965. Surfed heavy for about 7 years then got out of it during school and subsequent family responsibilities. Started back in 2 years ago and looking to become more active in Maryland. I've been up to the Jersey shore, Monmouth and Ocean County areas, three times in the last 6 weeks. I don't know that much about Maryland beaches having moved here about 4 years ago and always opting for the familiar trip to NJ.

Looking forward to getting involved in both short and long trips and Club activities. Currently riding an 8' Ashton and a 9' McTavish Longboard.

I've been surfing since May 2005 when I went to a surf camp in CR. Bought my board in August 2005 and have been working on it ever since. Not too shabby for a girl that spent her first 25 years about 10 hours for the nearest break. I actually have a quiver now!  My newest addition is a 6'2" Isle Retro Fish. I also have a 9'0" WRV longboard.

My other Interests include 'DC United football and of course, watching surfing, traveling for surfing, etc.

Mike "Punchy" Phillips aka "Punchy"
Short/funboarder - Bowie, MD

32-year old, born and raised in Central New Jersey. Rode a ~48" inflatable raft with the Hawaiian Punch logo on many a family trip downee Shore. Jersey wave knowlege helped when I finally learned to surf at the age of 25 after a move to Hermosa Beach, CA.  Surfed El Porto, with jaunts to Santa Cruz, Huntington Beach, and San Onofre. Moved to Maryland in 1999 and besides the DelMarVa, have surfed Jersey, Hatteras, and Rhode Island (all better than the local breaks IMHO). Been pretty much in dry dock since the birth of my son in Jan, 2003. Now (surprise, surprise) with the birth of boy/girl twins in June 2004, my boards have fallen deeper into the far corner of the basement. No worries, in 5 years or so I hope to be back at the beach en force - teaching the groms to surf!

Began surfing while in High School around 1993, but didn't get hooked until a trip to Nags Head. Originally I learned on a shortboard, but switched to the longboard after borrowing various friends boards.

Currently I go as often as possible and usually with Mark Vermillion and Paul Martin, who are current members. Took a trip to Costa Rica last January with Paul and some other friends. I have also surfed MD, DE, NC, FL, and NJ.  In addition, my uncle has been a major surfing influence on me due to his years of surfing and many travels including Costa Rica before it got popular and Thailand.  Other interests include fishing and  music.

After a short detour to Harrisburg, PA, Mike returned to MD in Sept 07.

Mike Weiss aka "autonomicpilot"
Kayaker/Longboarder - Washington, DC
SurfASC Webmaster (2006)

Started kayak surfing in 2000 on the Oregon Coast, going to the beach in summer when the rivers dried up--spent more days than I can count surfing most of the better breaks in central Oregon (particularly North Agate beach) and occasional trips to some NorCal spots including Crescent City, Moon Rock in Humboldt, a great spot in Mendocino of which I can't remember the name, and of course the shifty pounding surf of Ocean Beach in SF. In 2003, during a 3 month stay in Los Angeles, I bought myself a Becker 9'6" and half-assed taught myself to ride it at San Onofre--during that time I made it to many other breaks all the way up to Ventura, including Malibu.

Moved back to Annapolis (my childhood home) in 2004 and quickly hooked up with the Annapolis Surf Club in order to understand the here-it-comes, there-it-goes nature of DelMarVa surf conditions and the added headache of forecasting while living 2 hours away from the beach...I also joined to have some friendly faces in the water, and of course, to tell stories and schwill beer, etc.

I simply can't imagine anything better than a day at the beach, rain or shine. The ocean holds a very special place for me--it literally saved my life--and no matter how far away from it I go, it's the ocean that I will always return to, full circle.

Pat  "El Tuna" Hoge aka "El Tuna"
Longboarder - Parkton, MD

Born and raised on Long Island surfing the breaks at Gilgo, Democrat Point and Cedar Beach. Spent 6 years in the Navy and got my fair share of waves in So. California, Va. Beach, Oahu and even a few times in Antigua during hurricane season when the Carribean really started to crank. Married, 2 kids, dog, job, mortgage, Blah Blah Blah.  Almost killed myself on the Banzai Pipeline after my skeg broke during a bottom turn getting ready to trim a 15 foot hollow cement truck. Just bought some property about 45 minutes south of Ocean City that includes a shared portion of 42 acres on Cedar Island with a very nice surf break that's just begging for some ASC action.

My favorite breaks are Gordon's Pond, Indian River, and the Outer Banks. I have also surfed VaB and Rhode Island. I am friends of the son of ASC member George "The Beast."  My current ride is a WRV funshape as I was tired of getting dogged by my longboarder friends.  I have a fair number of tattoos...

I am a 42yo, Bay Area (CA) refugee, now teaching in Baltimore County - married, two kids, house...but I thought I was the only one making the pilgramage from Baltimore to the sea! Glad to know there are others out there. Sharing the ride (and the stoke) seems like a great idea to me. After three years trying (fairly successfully) to figure out surfing and surf forcasting on the right coast (after coming from CA) I am delighted to find this club. I am past the novice stage but no expert at all, comfortable in surf of most sizes as long as it isn't breaking top to bottom, looking for company of similar inclinations.  I learned to surf in Santa Cruz and around the San Francisco Bay Area,so I am used to fair sized surf.

Robert Durrell
Longboarder - DC Metro Area

Originally from Rhode Island, I moved to the Metro DC area in 1993. I learned how to surf in the kelp beds of Tijuana around age 12. For you old timers, do you remember Kevin Wholey (California cira 1970's)? Anyhow, shortly there after my uncle introduced me to my first "Daily Joy". A 7'2" big gun! From there it all went down hill... ditching school to go surfing, no wait that was a doctors appointment, yea right! Any way mom bought it..! Daily task - how to get the board out of the house without getting caught!

Anyhow, I grew up in New England surfing mainly in Rhode Island and the north shore of Mass and NH. After college I moved to Maryland and didn't get wet too often and really started missing to way too much. Sold the sail boat and bought two new boards (and dusted off the older boards)!

Paipo Boarder - Arbutus, MD
Treasurer, Board of Directors (2005); SurfASC Webmaster (2001-2005, 2006-present)
Founding Father of ASC - August 2001

I started been waveriding on one form or board or another in the late '60s, in Puerto Rico. My passion is combining travel and surf -- Puerto Rico being my most frequent destination of choice, at least annualy since the early 90s. Costa Rica has developed into another popular destination (1988, 2003, 2005-2007). In addition to the DelMarVa, I have on several occasions ridden the waves of southern NJ, VaBeach, Cape Hatteras, Central Florida, San Diego County, N. Oregon, and Oahu. I have also ridden different breaks in SoCal up through Ventura, Baja Mexico, and SW France. Also known as "The Rockman," "Eeyore," and "Tinky Winky." I am a self-confessed wave snob. :)

Waveriding birthyear: 1967. I birthed on a Hobie 9'4" noserider, quickly migrated to an Australian-made 7'6" V-bottom; started paipo boarding at the same time for riding places like Gas Chambers in the pre-leash days. Had so much fun that the paipo became my wave riding tool of choice. I birthed at Pine Grove, Jobos, and Maria's Beach, PR (my first REAL wave).

Mode: custom made paipo boards by Austin Saunders, Virginia Beach
(Paipo Orange Disk VII); Jon Ashton, Berlin, MD (Paipo Flying Disk V); and, John Mel, Freeline Design, Santa Cruz, CA (Paipo Fish).

Started surfing back in the late 60's at Natasket Beach, MA. Surfed beaches from Wells Beach, Maine to Rhode Island. Most of the time I was surfing Cape Cod and Newport, RI beaches. While in the USAF, I was stationed at SJAFB, USAF Goldsboro, NC and was able to surf Atlantic Beach / Emerald Isle for a couple of years. Stationed in Korea for a year with no waves!! The 90’s keep me busy with family and work, except for the family vacations to OCNJ. Still have my original Jim Phillips Surfboard (7’6”), added a hand-shaped Natural Art performance long board (9‘), couple of body boards and a few windsurfing boards.

I got my first board in Rio, Brazil about 15 years ago and have fallen in love with the sport ever since. Since then I have had the pleasure and luck to traveling to Maui and  living on the west coast for a bit; good to be back home and love some shoreline east coast shorebreak.

Founding Father of ASC - August 2001

Began surfing at Gilgo Beach, Long Island in May 1963. Surfed every South Shore break from Rockaway to Montauk Pt. until 1971 then moved to Southern California living in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and finally San Diego. Started Paipo riding on the Delmarva in 1977 and took up bodyboarding in the 1980s. I have surfed in places like Hawaii, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago. My favorite East Coast breaks are Cape Hatteras, Ditch Plains, NY, a little known break call Democratic Point on LI, and almost anywhere the water is warm. My other interest is playing drums and have been playing since 1963. My home break is Uptown Ocean City, MD where I own a condo. Currently I'm retired and enjoying my new hip.
