Happy New Year ASC!
The Annapolis Surf Club has surfed through
another year with great success. Definitely the best year to date.
Since the last newsletter the Club celebrated its 6th birthday with a
beach party at our adopted beach. The waves were not as gracious as
years past but food was great and it was good to see everyone out and
enjoying the beach with their family.

The fall was busy with everyone chasing what
seemed to be sporadic surf. However, the ASC entered a team in the
March of Dimes Contest held in Sandbridge VA. What a great event. The
contest was laid back and fun. We had decent surf all day long and
everybody free surfed in between their heats. The ASC was recognized
as the team who traveled the farthest, raised the most amount of
donations, and we placed 7th out of 12 teams. This is definitely an
event we plan to continue supporting. Thanks to everyone who supported
this effort. |

The ASC also had a Fall Fling in the northern end
of the Delmarva. Reports state that the waves cooperated as well. The
Club got there “surf on” in the morning and then met at the Gordon’s
Pond area for their second Beach Sweep of the year. It was nice to
hear that the beach was amazingly clean. However, the dunes are off
limits and that where the trash tends to accumulate. The weekend was
topped off with a pot luck luau at Chet’s surf shack on Saturday night.

As the ‘cane season comes to an end, the ASC
gathered for a party and the business of nominating and electing the
new Mai Tai Council (AKA ASC Officers). This process started to smoke
at the General Membership Meeting held around a roaring bon-fire at
Gary’s house. When the glow of the fire began to die, everyone
retreated to the home theater for some historical east coast surf
footage shot back in the 1960s and 70’s.

The fall surf arrived a bit later that normal but
the extra chill did not scare off the ASC. The biggest surf event this
year was the arrival of Hurricane Noel in November. It was downgraded
to a tropical storm by the time it graced the Delmarva but those who
got it… got it good. Saturday was the biggest day with average 9-10
footers rolling through immediately after the wind switched. A couple
of us paddled out to experience the bombs.
On Sunday the wind had calmed and the sun
revealed beautiful 4 to 6 footers for all. I think I saw a record
number of ASCers sampling the juice. Some of the surf starved stayed
on for Monday’s meager offering.

The
final ASC shindig was the annual Ice Breaker Holiday Party at TK
Sharky’s in Annapolis. The ASC was greeted by Santa bearing all sorts
of cool raffle prizes. The party was attended by members new and old
and gave everyone a chance to relax and tell surf stories. The food and
drinks were great. The new ASC Officers were announced and many members
walked away with swag won in the raffle.

On
a personal note, I am amazed at how the club has grown, evolved, and
matured in to a functional organization. I always wondered if this club
would succeed considering how personal everyone’s surfing addiction is
and how busy our lives can be. Yet, somehow, everyone bands together
and the club accomplishes what it sets out to do. The club lives,
breaths and has taken its first steps… and now its ready to run. After
six years of leading the organization, I elected not to run for
president. It’s time for a new driver to shift us in to gear. Gary Lay
has stepped up and has taken the wheel. Hang on cause it’s gonna be fun!
Long live the ASC!
