Quarterly Newsletter for August 2007

Aloha Annapolis Surf Club,

As the summer temps soar into the upper 90’s, I’m reminded as to how hot the ASC has been this year.  The year is only half over but the club has been really productive.  The year began with the club supporting the Delaware Surfrider’s “Save Herring Point” campaign. The effort was deemed successful when the State chose to save the wave and rebuild the original jetties.

ATTENTION SURFERS -- DON'T LOSE THIS!
In the spring the club had a Cinco de Mayo Surf movie gathering to get everyone jazzed for the upcoming year. The club has also contributed a total of 45 volunteer man-hours towards helping to protect the beach environment.

Those man-hours went towards the Ocean City Surfrider’s Aloha Garden planting and the “Leave only Footprints” billboard on Rt. 50.  It was amazing to see what has washed up on our shores. A big Thank You to everyone who has donated his or her time in support of the ASC mission.

The ASC has also adopted and has become the stewards of the Gordon’s Pond beach in Rehoboth DE where we had our first ever beach sweep.

All of this hard work has not been completed without some fun along the way.  The club had its annual Spring Fling in Lewes Delaware and was greeted with small (but surfable) waves.  As always the food was great and the last piece of pineapple upside down cake almost caused brawl.  The club entered two teams in the OC Longboard Challenge.  As always, it was the summer’s first beach party and everyone had a blast.

Several small groups from the club have become adventurous and have taken off for the locales of Costa Rica and Panama.  I can’t wait to hear the stories and see the pics at the next event!  And don’t forget all the ASC carpooling and informal surf abouts that take place when the waves hit our local shores.  I’ve had fun surfing with some members that I have not paddled out with in a long time.

The years not over and we still have a lot planned.  August 18 will be the 6th anniversary of the ASC and it will be celebrated at the Gordon’s Pond beach in full family day BBQ potluck style.  All are welcome!  There will also be a DMV Surfari this September, the March of Dimes Funfest/contest in October and another Surf Movie/ Membership Meeting prior to the club officer elections.  A don’t forget the Holiday Party to finish out the year.

It’s been a hot one but the ASC is even hotter.  I hope to see everyone cooling off with some tube time this ‘cane season.

Mahalo,

Neal Carver, ASC Club President
